The Settlement Centre is housed in two of the oldest buildings in the town of Borgarnes, Pakkhúsið and Búðarklettur. Two exhibitions are the focus of the Settlement Centre. The Settlement Exhibition employs sophisticated lighting and multimedia to give an impression of what it was like for the first settlers of Iceland to set out across the wilds of the North Atlantic to their new home. The story of warrior-poet Egill Skallagrímsson is told, on the other hand, through works of art in wood by many artists, depicting aspects of the saga. Audio guides to both exhibitions are available in Icelandic and four other languages, in addition to a special children’s guide. The audio-guided tour takes about 30 minutes. The Saga Loft is a theatrical space where the prizewinning play Mr. Skallagrímsson is performed, and storytellers provide insight into early Iceland. The Settlement Centre provides good facilities for receptions, meetings and seminars. A fine restaurant is operated in connection with the Centre, offering a variety of good food. Open monday - Thursday 10am- 7pm and Friday til Sunday 10am - 10 pm. Groups can gain access to the Centre and the restaurant outside of normal hours through prior arrangement with the management.
