Hólar is among the most important places in Icelandic history, an episcopal seat since 1106. Hólar is a cherished place of worship, Holar cathedral is a gem in the architectural history of Iceland that resounds with music, services and prayer during an ambitious summer program. An extensive archeological survey and excavation has taken place, resulting in historical exhibits and guided tours. The beautiful turf-built farmhouse there dates from the nineteenth century, while Auðunnarstofa is a reconstruction of a fourteenth-century wooden building at Hólar, based on available sources. Hiking trails in Hólar forest are marked and the traditional routes across the magnificient mountain range, Tröllaskagi – the range of giants all lead to Hólar. Tourist services include accommodation in the dormitories of the old school house, in summer houses and a charming camping site in the forest, swimming pool and hot tub and an excellent restaurant. An ambitious program of summer concerts is held in Hólar Cathedral, as well as daily prayers and weekly services. Guided tours, cultural events and information services are available. |
