Vatnsfjörður in Ísafjarðardjúp was the seat of power of the Vatnsfirðingar clan, one the richest and most powerful families in Iceland in the 12th and 13th centuries. Archaeological excavations have been taking place there since 2003, and have shown that the history of the farm goes back to the 10th century, when there was a large house, a smithy, and several other farm buildings. The farm was occupied right up until the present day, and at the top of a large man-made farm mound, a 19th century house is also being excavated, which is revealing many fascinating details of life in the more recent past.

The Vatnsfjörður archaeoligical excavations are a collaborative project involving both Icelandic and foreign organisations, led by the Icelandic Institute of Archaeology and the medieval West Fjords Society. Funding has been granted by the Alþingi (Icelandic parliament) and the Archeology Fund.

In summer of 2011, archaeologists will be working onside 25/7-19/8, and can provide guided tours.
