Hólar is one of Iceland’s most important historical and ecclesiastical sites, where the episcopate for north Iceland, and a cathedral school, were founded in 1106. It now has its own bishop once more, and is a university campus. The 18th-century cathedral is one of the treasures of Icelandic architectural history. Church services are held in the cathedral, which also hosts concerts. Guided tours are available. Adjacent to the cathedral are Nýibær (a turf farmhouse) and Auðunarstofa (a reconstruction of a mediaeval building). Information on archaeological excavations on the site. Icelandic Horse History Centre displays the icelandic horse and his role in Icelands historie. Holar offers good travel services, walking routes, swimmingpool, a restaurant as well as it offers a wide variety of accomodation-apartments, chalets, woodland and campsite.
